What is aluminum sulfate?
Aluminum sulfate is a mineral with chemical formula Al2(SO4)3 and pure aluminum sulfate is white and in the presence of contaminant its color turns to gray. This chemical is one of the most widely used aluminum compounds and can form double salt crystals with other cations such as potassium or ammonium ions or alum with the chemical formula NH4Al(SO4)2. The three oxidation states of aluminum ion creates the high capacity for this ion to coagulate the colloids in water and effluents containing suspended particles and colloids such as effluents from paper mills, textiles, and foodstuffs. Along with polyaluminum chloride (PAC), it has become one of the most widely used materials in water and wastewater treatment. It has a high capacity to coagulate milk and precipitate the lipids in it.
Method of production of aluminum sulfate
Pure aluminum sulfate is produced by the direct reaction between diluted sulfuric acid and aluminum hydroxide or gamma phase aluminum oxide. This reaction is highly exothermic and accompanied by intense production of steam, and its product is suitable for water and wastewater treatment. Aluminum hydroxide from the alumina plating industry (aluminum dross) can be used to produce low-quality Al2(SO4)3 for industrial use.
Other methods include the production of this chemical by the reaction of calcite to bauxite or the ballclay.
To produce alum, it must be added to an aqueous solution of concentrated Al2(SO4)3, ammonium sulfate, or potassium sulfate to make alum crystals.
