Calcium carbonate

Manganese chloride , Calcium carbonate

What is calcium carbonate?

Calcium carbonate with the chemical formula CaCO3 is an inorganic compound, its color is mainly white to cream and widely occurs in nature (about 4%). This chemical has various ores such as calcite, travertine, and marble which are the most famous of CaCO3 ores. It is the most widely used material in the industry, and both mineral and synthetic types are used.

The pure form of CaCO3 can be produced by passing CO2 gas through a hydrated lime slurry, which is whiter, purer, and shinier than its mineral form.

Sedimentary production method

Synthetic calcium carbonate production is extremely economical compared to natural and mineral types. In the case of optimal production of synthetic calcium carbonate, its price sometimes reaches up to 40 times higher than the mineral type.

In order to produce CaCO3, the ore is first calcined in a furnace at a temperature of 1000 to 1100 °C and transferred to the grinding unit. After cooling, rocks are transferred to a lime hydrator and the quicklime is converted to hydrated lime in reaction with water. The resulting slurry is hydrated lime, which is suspended due to agitation and impurities and raw materials’ sediment. The exhaust gas, containing water vapor and carbon dioxide from the combustion fuel, is passed through the hydrated lime slurry and converted it back into calcium carbonate. In the next step, the precipitated CaCO3 is filtered using a press filter and the resulting cake is dried slowly in a rotary dryer at a temperature of less than 70 °C. (Increasing the temperature will change the color of the product from white to gray)

Finally, the product is milled, packaged, and ready for sale.

Uses and applications of calcium carbonate

  • Production of quicklime and hydrated lime
  • Production of ceramic tile glaze
  • Used in animal and poultry feed supplements
  • Pharmacology
  • Calcium nitrate production
  • Used in paper manufacturing (producing paper without using cellulosic materials)
  • Production of paints and putties
  • Production of granules and plastics as inexpensive fillers
  • Cement production
  • Production of dicalcium phosphate
  •  Acid neutralization in the industrial production of zinc and copper ingots
