Zinc carbonate

Zinc carbonate, with the chemical formula ZnCO₃, is a white substance. Zinc carbonate mineral ore is called Smithsonite, that along with sphalerite (ZnS) and calamine (ZnO) are the main zinc metal sources. ZnCO₃ after calcination in rotary furnaces or multiple hearth furnaces and turning into zinc oxide is used as a raw material in zinc ingots and zinc sulfate factories.

This chemical dissolves slowly in dilute sulfuric acid to produce zinc sulfate and carbon dioxide, but it is insoluble in water.

Sulfuric acid reaction with ZnCO₃:

ZnCO₃ + H₂SO₄ → ZnSO₄ + CO₂ + H₂O

How to produce zinc carbonate

ZnCO₃ is obtained by reaction between zinc sulfate solution with sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃, or sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO₃. The by-product of this reaction is sodium sulfate.

First, the zinc sulfate solution is poured into a steel or polyethylene tank and, while stirring, the solution is heated to the temperature of 65 °C. Sodium carbonate is then slowly added to the solution and the pH is raised to 6, and consequently zinc carbonate forms. The by-product of this reaction is sodium sulfate. The produced ZnCO₃ cake is separated from the solution using a press filter. The resulting cake is dried using a rotary dryer and packed after pulverizing by the mill.

 ZnSO₄ + Na₂CO₃ → ZnCO₃ + Na₂SO₄
