Manganese chloride

Manganese chloride , Calcium carbonate

What is manganese chloride?

Manganese chloride with the chemical formula MnCl2, molecular mass 125.84 g / mol, melts at 655 °C. Its light pink crystals usually form tetrahydrate salt (MnCl2 4H2O) and dissolve in water very well. Prolonged exposure to this substance may lead to manganese disease.

Production methods

This chemical can be produced by various reactions, 3 of them are presented here:

Mn + 2 HCl + 4 H 2 O → MnCl 2 (H 2 O) 4   + H 2

MnCO 3   + 2 HCl + 3 H 2 O → MnCl 2 (H 2 O) 4  + CO 2

MnO 2  + 4 HCl → MnCl 2  + 2 H 2 O + Cl 2

The best and most common method for industrial MnCl2 production is the reaction of manganese carbonate with hydrochloric acid. The advantage of this reaction is that it does not produce chlorine gas and unwanted by-products.

The solution resulting from this reaction, after cooling, slowly forms tetrahydrate manganese chloride crystals.

Uses and applications of manganese chloride

  • used in dry cell batteries
  • Used in some food additives
  • Agriculture
  • drug manufacturing
  • Used as catalyst in the synthesis of organic chemical compounds
