WHAT IS ZINC NITRATE ?
Zinc nitrate is an acidic substance with the chemical formula Zn (NO3)2 and white crystals that is obtained from the reaction between nitric acid and zinc metal, zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide or zinc carbonate and so on. Generally, Zn (NO3)2 keeps 0 to 6 water molecules in its crystal structure. In contact with the skin, this substance causes irritation and the respiration of its dried powder is harmful to the respiratory system. Contact of nitrate zinc with fire increases the intensity of fire and the release of toxic nitrogen gases.
Nitrate is soluble in water and alcohol.
Zinc nitrate production method
Zinc nitrate can be produced by direct reaction of nitric acid with zinc metal. The product of this reaction does not have good quality due to impurities and the toxic by-products. Toxic nitrogen gas is nitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), which is released as a dark brown gas and its inhalation is very harmful.
Zn + 2HNO 3 (diluted) → Zn (NO 3 ) 2 + H 2
For the production of pure zinc nitrate, the reaction between zinc carbonate and nitric acid can be employed. First, zinc carbonate is mixed into a steel or ceramic tank as a slurry, and nitric acid is slowly added to it. It is an exothermic reaction and will be accompanied by the release of carbon dioxide.
