What is zinc sulfide?
Zinc sulfide has the chemical formula ZnS and is white to cream and light pink and is the most abundant zinc element in nature, which has a molecular mass of 97.47g/mol. This chemical mineral is called sphalerite and due to mixing with other elements, it is dark and black, and its synthetic and pure type is white, which is widely used in the production of brake pads, drilling very deep wells, and producing pigments.
Production method
There are two main methods for producing:
- Reduction of zinc sulfate with coke or anthracite in the furnace and production of ZnS
- Precipitation of zinc sulfate solution using sodium and separation and drying of produced ZnS deposits
