What is copper carbonate?

Copper carbonate is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula CuCO₃ which due to its very low solubility product constant, Ksp, has very low solubility in water. This chemical dissolves in sulfuric acid and acetic acid and produces copper sulfate and copper acetate. By heating copper carbonate, it decomposes to copper oxide and carbon dioxide gas as a by-product of the reaction. The mineral CuCO₃ ore is called Malachite, and copper hydroxy carbonate is called Azurite.

Production method

This group is obtained by reaction between copper sulfate solution with sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃, or sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO₃. The by-product of this reaction is sodium sulfate.

First, the copper sulfate solution is introduced into the reaction tank at a temperature of more than 60 °C, which is stirred with a suitable mixer, and then sodium carbonate is slowly added to the solution. By increasing the pH of the solution to 6, the entire copper in the solution is precipitated and suspended in the solution. The produced sodium sulfate remains in the solution. By filtering the slurry by the press filter machine, the copper carbonate cake is separated and prepared for drying with a rotary dryer, a liquid bed dryer, or a class dryer. After drying the cake, it can be ground and sold after packing.

Clear sodium sulfate solution extracted from the press filter is concentrated and transferred to the polyethylene pond in order to produce the heptahydrate crystalline sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄.7H₂O) or using a spray dryer can be converted to anhydrous sodium sulfate.

The reaction of copper sulfate with sodium carbonate is as follows.

CuSO ₄ + 2Na₂CO₃ → CuCO₃ + 2Na₂SO₄

The reaction of decomposition of CuCO₃ to copper oxide and carbon dioxide gas by heating:

CuCO ₃ (s) + Heat → CuO (s) + CO₂ (g)
