What is a standing (vertical) lime kiln?

Vertical, standing, or shaft lime kilns are relatively new kilns for baking all kinds of lumpy stones, especially limestone, dolomite and magnesite, which have high fuel consumption efficiency and lower depreciation compared to rotary kilns. These types of devices are designed and manufactured in two simple types, single shaft and twin shaft.

Advantages and disadvantages of standing ovens compared to rotary ovens: Advantages: lower fuel consumption (sometimes up to a third), lower depreciation.

Disadvantages: more construction cost, impossibility of baking small stones and clay.

Standing Kiln (vertical) single shaft

These devices are made of a vertical pipe, whose inner walls are covered with a layer of insulating brick and a layer of refractory brick, and the lumps of limestone enter the device from the upper part of the furnace and slowly move down. Air suction is performed by a high-pressure suction fan from above, and methane gas enters the combustion chamber from the lower third of the furnace. The hot air resulting from the passage of hot air from the bottom of the furnace, which has passed through the hot stones, reaches near the flame and mixes with methane gas, causing its combustion.

The advantage of the single-shaft standing oven compared to the twin-shaft oven is the uniformity of cooking and the absence of temperature shock in the refractory wall of the oven.

Standing (vertical) twin oven

This type of Standing lime kiln is made of two cylindrical or standing cubic chambers that are connected to each other from the point of the lower third by a channel. At the same time, combustion is carried out in one of the furnaces and the heat output of the firing shaft is transferred to the second furnace through the channel and preheats the stones. After finishing cooking in the first stage, its burners are turned off, the direction of suction is changed and the burners of the second stage are turned on. After unloading the first load, the raw stone enters it and is preheated until the burners are turned on again and the conditions are ready to start cooking.

The advantage of this type of furnace compared to the single shaft type is that it consumes less fuel. Of course, this type of furnace is more expensive and has more depreciation in the refractory layer.
