Copper oxide

کربنات مس , Copper oxide

Copper oxide

Copper oxide with the chemical formula CuO is a black and insoluble substance in water, which together with cuprous oxide (red) with the chemical formula Cu2O is one of the two stable copper oxides. The crystalline structure of this material is monoclinic.

The mineral CuO is called tenorite, which is an oxidized mineral of copper and may be found in copper mines along with malachite and chalcopyrite copper.

It dissolves in mineral acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid and forms copper sulfate, copper nitrate, and copper chloride, respectively. The reduction of this chemical is produced by hydrogen gas, carbon monoxide, or coke.

Copper oxide production method

Cupric oxide is produced by various reactions

  1. Coagulation of copper carbonate in a furnace is associated with the production of copper oxide and carbon dioxide gas.

CuCO 3 (s) → CuO (s) + CO 2 (g)

  1. Copper sulfate deposition using sodium hydroxide at a pH of 8, filtration of unstable copper hydroxide deposits, heating to copper hydroxide, and conversion to this chemical. Of course, the CuO produced in this method must be completely powdered with a mill that is ready to be packaged and sold. In this method, the following solution is a sodium sulfate filter, which is a by-product of the reaction and will be ready for packaging and sale after concentrating and crystallization.

2 Cu (OH) 2 (s) → 2 CuO (s) + 2 H 2 O (l) + O 2 (g)

  1. Boiling molten metal copper in an electric arc, induction furnace, or rotary melting furnace and cooling copper vapor in cooling pipes and separating it from the air using a filter bag. The product obtained from this method will be very pure, high quality, and free of contamination. This product is suitable for sale as a pigment for making metallic black paint for expensive cars. The black color produced from CuO pigments is one of the most expensive and high-quality colors.

2 Cu + O 2 → 2 Cuo

Applications of copper oxide

  • Production of metallic black quality pigments
  • Painting tiles, ceramics, and glazing
  • Production of artistic colors
  • Production of livestock and poultry feed concentrate
  • Production of copper welding wires
  • Battery production
  • Production of other copper compounds such as copper sulfate, copper chloride, copper carbonate, copper nitrate and copper acetate
