Magnesium oxide

Magnesium oxide

What is magnesium oxide?

Magnesium oxide, or magnesia, is a white mineral formed by the ionic bonding of magnesium ions with oxygen ions and has the chemical formula MgO. It also occurs in magnesium mines, and the pure compound can be produced by chemical reactions. Because of the high melting point, 2852 °C, magnesium oxide is mainly used in the production of refractory materials. It is also used in agriculture and animal husbandry. Magnesium bricks, which are produced from MgO, are used in smelting furnace, high-temperature calcination furnace, and refractory crucible. The main disadvantage of magnesium bricks and refractory material is their reaction with water and conversion to magnesium hydroxide, which results in bricks collapsing.

MgO + H 2 O → Mg (OH) 2

Method of production of magnesium oxide

This chemical is produced by the calcination of magnesium carbonate in rotary kilns at a temperature of about 1000 °C. The purity of magnesium carbonate is an important factor in this process.

Uses and applications of MgO

• Manufacturing of refractory bricks and materials

• Used in electrical insulator

• Production of Portland cement

• Drinking water and wastewater treatment

• Used in medical production as an antacid for relief of heartburn and dyspepsia

• Production of white colors
